PSALMS - Specks of Matter

My husband and I love to go camping in the desert.

And one of my favorite things to do is sit by the campfire and look at the sky.

It's fun to scan the sky at dusk, and try to find the first few *stars* that appear. Before you know it, the sky is FILLED with them – they are EVERYWHERE! You can even see the Milky Way – it looks like a wispy cloud that stretches from horizon to horizon.

When I was a little girl, one of my favorite things to study and learn about was astronomy– it still is!

One of the amazing facts I learned about stars is this – the distances are mind-boggling!

Ready for our lesson? (Don't worry – there won't be a pop quiz!)

Besides the Sun, the nearest star to Earth is called Alpha Centauri. It lies 4.21 light years away from earth. That means if something could travel at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles EVERY SECOND, it would take 4.21 years to reach this closest star.

Think of it this way – the spacecraft that holds the record for the fastest ever space travel would take a STAGGERING 19,000 years to reach this star!

So, needless to say, sitting under that beautiful canopy of stars in the desert is an absolutely spectacular, awe-inspiring experience.

And quite humbling, I might add.

Today's "Bible Pick 'Ems" is a perfect reminder:

"When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers – the moon and the stars you set in place – what are people that you should think about them, mere mortals that you should care for them?" (Psalm 8:3, 4)

You know, it's true.

Staring at the infinite majesty of the skies, it is easy to think that we are nothing to an Almighty God.

And yet, Psalm 147:4 makes this amazing statement: "[God] counts the stars and knows them by name."

In light of His awesome power, we seem so small and insignificant.

We seem like nothing more than "specks of matter."

And yet, our God DOES indeed think of us… more often than we can even know.

Listen to the words of Psalm 139:17, 18: "How precious are your thoughts about ME, O God. They CANNOT BE NUMBERED! I can’t even count them…"

Our God, the One who knows the stars by name, also knows my name, and YOUR name, each one of you.

And He thinks about us all the time.

We are "specks of matter"…that matter!

Yes, my friends, God not only THINKS about us – HE LOVES US!

Let these wonderful words from the book of Psalms wash over you:

"The LORD is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love…He does not punish us for our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as GREAT AS THE HEIGHT OF THE HEAVENS ABOVE EARTH…For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust…the love of the LORD remains FOREVER with those who love him."

Yes, looking at the stars in the desert sky gives me new insights about God. The work of His creation in the heavens is awe-inspiring, and it can make us feel insignificant.

However, the same God who paints the sky with stars, is also the One who came to die for us!

He gave His life for us – just because He LOVES us.

And you know what the best news is?

This love is ours FOREVER!

"NO power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, NOTHING in all creation will EVER be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord!" (Romans 8:39)

I will never look at the stars without thinking about God’s love, His FOREVER love.

And my hope for you today is this – that you will ALWAYS know His deep love within your own heart, and that you will draw closer to the majestic God of the heavens, the Master of the skies, the One who knows the stars by name…

…the "Living One who sees YOU" – and knows YOUR name.

  1. Blessings Sharon, This is SPECtacular and so beautifully written! The Word washes over me and I soak in His Love and the Message!

I love to look up at the STARS and the skies but I get so tired of counting. I'm thankful that God counts and knows each one of us and we matter to Him.

The universe is filled with His glory and is magnified by Our Creator down to the minuet detail yet He still loves us. Thank you for this vision and your hope for us; may this also be your double portion as you enjoy camping and living fully this week! Praise God, the Master and Painter of the heavens! They reflect such beauty and magnificent Glory, I can only imagine in the stillness and awe as I wait for the revelation of more of His glory... WOO HOO GLORY! May the glory of the Lord refresh you and
strengthen you as you star gaze at the work of His fingers because I can see Him SMILING :0)

    <>< Peace, love and JOY,
    Peggy

  2. Wonderful post.. It's amazing to me that God, who created the earth, hung the stars in the sky, numbered the hairs on my head.. even knows me by name, takes time to hear my prayers and answers them.. amazing it is that I can even have a relationship with Him. He just amazes me!

    Blessings,
    Misty

  3. Well, my friend you know how much I love to be outdoors at night, looking at the stars, the moon, the planets...

Just to think that He knows them all by name is incomprehensible to my finite mind.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  4. Beautiful post on the stars. How great is our God, He even knows the number of hairs on our head. What an awesome God we have. To just sit back and listen to music, watch the stars anything He has made just for us to soak in. And to think we're getting closer to His sending Jesus back to earth to take us all to Heaven. As the song says "I can only imagine what it will be like."

  5. I remember sitting with my young kids beneath the stars a season ago; it was a special moment of rich remembrance for us. We haven't done that in a long time. Maybe tonight would be a good time to trace them all the way back home to Jesus!

    What blessing, sister. Thank you.

  6. We are specks of matter that matter. I love that. When I consider the universe, to me it is beyond comprehension. How amazing that such a powerful God would be so concerned with us and want to spend eternity with us is just as amazing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  7. Peggy - Such a glorious praise you have uttered to our Almighty Lord! I join you in that heartfelt WOO HOO! And yet, sometimes the wonder of His vast universe just hushes me - God sometimes speaks in a whisper when I look at His glory.

Pain to Purpose - WELCOME! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this - and it's a wonderful privilege to join you in worshiping the Lord who rules the skies!

Misty - I couldn't agree more! Is there a better word than amazing?! I am also amazed/awed at His ability to run the universe, and also the smallest detail of my life. He is...well...you said it! AMAZING!

Joan - I do know how you love the outdoors, and so I also know how you appreciate what I'm saying. There is great grandeur in the night sky - and it speaks to the timeless faithfulness of our great God!

Alice - I agree with you. I sense the time of His return is approaching, too. Sometimes I try to imagine what it will be like - and I can't. Besides the beauty of a restored creation - which is glorious in itself - I try to picture being able to see His face and look into His eyes. THAT will be indescribable.

Elaine - It is my blessing to hear your words. For me, there's nothing quite like that sky. Pondering the imponderables - and there aren't many things that fascinate and awe me like the universe - well, it's a quietly intimate time with the Lord. Hope you had that time with your family!

Charlotte - I couldn't agree more. It boggles my mind that a God who is capable of fashioning stars, and planets, and galaxies takes the time to fashion every cell of every person who has ever existed. And then, He loves us and cares for us, too?! Majesty and wonder...

    GOD BLESS!
